TIRANA, Jan 26 /ATA/ Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Albania’s historic and unique role during World War II, emphasizing that the protection and salvation of Jews by Albanians represents a rare example of humanity and courage that will never be forgotten.
In his remarks today at a special plenary session of the Israeli Parliament, attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama, Netanyahu stated, “That chapter of our history will never be forgotten across generations. Equally unforgettable is the example set by those who rescued Jews and helped them flee persecution.”
According to him, what happened in Albania during the Italian and Nazi occupation was unique. “Dozens and hundreds of Albanian Muslims risked their lives to save Jews. They hid them, shared their food with them, and endangered not only themselves but also the members of their families to protect them,” stated the Israeli Prime Minister.
Netanyahu emphasized that Albania represented a rare example in Europe at that time. “Albania was an island of peace in an ocean of evil, and these heroic acts reflect the highest values of a nation that honoured its friends,” he stated.
Referring to bilateral relations after World War II, Netanyahu recalled that Albania endured difficult decades under the communist regime, while Israel was officially recognized by Albania in 1969. “Following the political changes 35 years ago, Albania and Israel strengthened their diplomatic relations,” he stated.
The Israeli Prime Minister also praised the reforms undertaken by Albania in recent years. “Under your leadership, Albania has become a vibrant garden of Europe that is thriving. I appreciate the reforms you have implemented to improve the market situation in Albania, which are also valued by Israeli investors coming to the country. We are ready to assist you in every way: in security, the fight against terrorism, innovation, technology, trade, and culture,” Netanyahu stated.
