Berisha says opposition in “final stretch” toward victory

TIRANA, Jan 24 /ATA/ – Opposition Democratic Party (DP) and its allies held their second nationwide protest outside the prime minister’s office on Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard in central Tirana on Saturday.

Addressing supporters, DP leader Sali Berisha said the opposition was in the “final stretch” of its political campaign and that nothing would stand in the way of victory.

“My message is this: today we are in the final kilometre, and with God’s help nothing will stop us from reaching our victory,” Berisha said. “We are standing on the threshold of a major triumph, even if for many that triumph may still appear distant given the crossroads Albania faces.”

Berisha described the years spent in opposition as a difficult “marathon,” marked, he said, by pressure, intimidation and political isolation, but also by resilience and sacrifice.

He said the opposition had rejected what he described as attempts to marginalize or neutralize it, adding that the Democratic Party had emerged stronger despite adversity.

“In this journey, we rose like a phoenix from the ashes,” Berisha said, claiming the opposition had reached the “final kilometre” as the most widely supported political force in the country.

Berisha also repeated claims that Prime Minister Edi Rama could not be removed through elections alone, arguing that authoritarian systems fall only through popular revolt.
