Murals at Saint Todri Church undergo specialized restoration

TIRANA, Jan 23 /ATA/ – Conservators at the restoration laboratory of Albania’s National Institute of Cultural Heritage are carrying out specialised restoration work on fragments of mural paintings from the Church of St. Todri in Kadipashaj, near the town of Lushnje.

The process follows professional standards and contemporary methodologies, ensuring the preservation of the murals’ authenticity as well as their artistic and historical value for future generations.

The St. Todri Church, a designated Cultural Monument, dates to the first half of the 19th century and is attributed to painter Joan Çetiri.

The church has also undergone structural consolidation, drainage improvements and restoration of architectural elements.

Work began last year under the supervision of heritage specialists, with the aim not only of protecting the site’s historical and spiritual significance but also of restoring it as a living part of the community’s cultural identity.

Restoration of the mural paintings is seen as a key element of the project. Conservation work is also under way on the iconostasis and on the decorated wooden ceiling of the naos, which is considered unique of its kind.
