Over 1,600 workers deployed to restore power after storm disruptions

TIRANA, Jan 9 /ATA/ – More than 1,600 workers have been deployed to address power supply disruptions caused by severe weather, Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure and Energy Minister Belinda Balluku said on Friday.

Speaking at a meeting of the Interministerial Committee for Civil Emergencies, Balluku said that as of 08:00 a.m., the national electricity grid remains stable and all electricity transmission lines were fully operational despite heavy rain and flooding in parts of Albania.

“According to the Power Transmission System Operator’s report, all lines are operational and there are no problems with electricity transmission,” she said, adding that the overall situation had improved nationwide.

Balluku said more than 1,600 workers had been deployed on the ground since January 2, focusing on the worst-affected areas including Tirana, Durres, Vlora, Gjirokaster and Elbasan. Northern regions were less affected due to earlier infrastructure investments, she added.

She said changing weather conditions in mountainous areas had caused temporary outages in parts of Kukes and Librazhd, but all had been restored “in record time”.

At the peak of the disruptions on Thursday, power cuts affected a total of 38,731 customers out of about 1 million nationwide, Balluku said. On Friday, the number had fallen to 19,175, including 4,786 customers in urban areas, 10,030 in rural areas and 4,359 in remote rural zones.

She said authorities expected further restorations in the coming hours.
