TIRANA, Jan 5 /ATA/ – Taulant Balla, head of the parliamentary group of the ruling Socialist Party, reacted to a protest held by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) outside the Prime Minister’s office on Monday, invoking the anniversary of the deadly January 21, 2011 events.
Balla said the 15th anniversary of the January 21 killings, when four protesters were shot dead during an anti-government demonstration in Tirana, was approaching and that the issue of accountability remained unresolved.
“Those who gave the order to open fire on the people must face justice,” Balla said.
Referring to comments made by DP officials during the protest comparing Albania to Venezuela, Balla said the opposition had implicitly acknowledged the gravity of ordering security forces to use lethal force against demonstrators.
“The anniversary of January 21, 2011 is approaching, and the bells are ringing louder than ever,” he said.
Balla also pointed to what he described as low turnout at the opposition protest, saying it reflected a lack of public support for the demonstration.
