PM Rama says opposition cannot hold reform process hostage

TIRANA, Dec 30 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Tuesday the ruling majority has a duty to govern and will not allow the opposition to hold the reform process hostage.

Commenting on the opposition’s boycott of two reform commissions following a dispute over the selection of the People’s Advocate, the government head said the Socialist majority had consistently kept the door open for dialogue and that the opposition had always been offered a seat at the table.

“If they want to come through the open door and sit at the table, they are welcome at any time. But no one can hold us hostage. The work that needs to be done will be done, with or without them,” Rama said.

He added that the reforms would ideally be carried out jointly, but rejected the idea that the process should be halted because of the opposition’s positions.

“If they want a different form of government, they should win the elections,” he said. “If they do not, they are free to do anything else – except stop our work.”

Rama also said it was not credible to take seriously a party that first endorses the appointment of the People’s Advocate and then withdraws its support.
