Berisha calls for persistent, peaceful antigovernment protests

TIRANA, Dec 24 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of openly opposing the lifting of parliamentary immunities and the arrest of individuals involved in organized crime, calling it an attempt to block the enforcement of laws and judicial decisions.

In a press statement, Berisha said the government is obstructing the actions of prosecutors and courts, placing primary responsibility on the Prime Minister. Opposition leader added that the only solution to the current situation is citizen action through sustained and peaceful protests.

“The square and the boulevard belong to the citizens. Protests should not be temporary, but continue until the political goal of the opposition – removing the Premier from power – is achieved,” Berisha said.

He emphasized that citizens’ courage, determination, and will are the only requirements to bring about Rama’s removal.

“The proof is in the revolt that has already been shown. But it must be sustained. The boulevard must remain with the citizens. The square must remain with the citizens. Not for one, two, or three days, but as long as necessary to achieve the goal,” he added.

Berisha said the opposition will work to mobilize citizens willing to make sacrifices in a peaceful uprising.

He also referred to what he called the “AKSHI case,” alleging that the agency has been involved in questionable financial practices, and called for a full institutional investigation and transparency regarding the financial benefits of certain private entities.

Berisha criticized the media for insufficient coverage of these issues and urged judicial institutions to act free from political influence, while the opposition continues efforts to mobilize citizens in a broad, peaceful response.
