TIRANA, Dec 5 /ATA/ – Christopher R. Hill, the first U.S. ambassador to Albania after the fall of communism, stated that there is no doubt that Albania will join the European Union during the presentation of his book “Outpost: A Diplomat at Work” on Friday in Tirana, an event attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Reflecting on his first visit to Albania 34 years ago, Hill recalled staying at Hotel Dajti and observing the life around him.
“I remember standing on the steps of Hotel Dajti on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone was walking by. I wondered if there were private vehicles here, and the answer was no. But it also represented something else about Albania and its wonderful people – a sense of closeness and a desire for stronger relations,” he said.
Hill emphasized the importance of listening as a diplomat. “When you enter a country, as every diplomat should, you dive in fully. I have always valued listening – truly hearing what people say,” he said.
He described Albania as one of the most complex countries in Europe, noting its strong respect for history. “This has always driven me to respect everyone I meet,” Hill said.
He highlighted Albania’s regional engagement over the years.
“I know there has been a focus on regional issues in Albania, but this marked an improvement compared to the idea that Albania was completely isolated from the rest of the world. The country became less isolated and began transforming into a positive regional actor, addressing ongoing regional challenges,” Hill said.
He also praised Albania’s broader Euro-Atlantic involvement. “Albania became an active player in Europe as well, sending troops to support various missions undertaken by the Euro-Atlantic alliance. It did not simply become a member of a Balkan community; it became an active participant in Euro-Atlantic relations. Albania’s NATO membership was not because the U.S. said so, but because the Albanian people demanded it and took the necessary steps themselves. That was a great achievement for Albanians,” Hill said.
Looking ahead to EU accession, Hill stressed the ongoing efforts required.
“Now the issue before Albania is EU membership. As an American diplomat, I support all those seeking to join the EU. For me, this is straightforward – but it is not easy for Europe. It requires considerable effort, and I believe Albania is making those efforts,” he said.
“It is very important for Albania to join the EU, and there is no longer any doubt that Albania will become a member,” Hill concluded.
