TIRANA, Nov 28 /ATA/ – Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha on Friday wished Albanians a happy Independence Day and commemorated the 81st anniversary of the country’s liberation from Nazi forces in World War Two.
In a message posted on social media, Berisha underlined the symbolism of 28 November, celebrated as Albania’s Flag Day and the anniversary of the 1912 declaration of independence in Vlorë.
“Happy 28 November, the birthday of independent Albania,” he wrote, paying tribute to Ismail Qemali, Isa Boletini and the signatories of independence, as well as “the thousands who sacrificed their lives throughout history for freedom and national dignity”.
Berisha also referred to the historic act of 1443, when national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg raised his banner in Kruja, a date widely viewed as the start of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire.
He noted that 28 November also marks 81 years since the withdrawal of foreign occupying forces in 1944, adding that the communist regime that followed “turned the anti-occupation struggle into fratricide and installed a Stalinist dictatorship”.
The opposition leader used the occasion to criticise the current government, which he accused of turning Albania into a “narcostate” over the past decade. He called on supporters to be “inspired by this day to work for political change.”
