Berisha: Main opposition DP to launch broad grassroots revamp

TIRANA, Nov 27 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha said on Thursday that the main opposition party will begin a broad restructuring process at the grassroots level, as he addressed internal developments and delays in the post-May 11 general election review.

Speaking at a press conference, Berisha said the internal analysis had been postponed pending the final report of the OSCE/ODIHR, adding that the party had succeeded in “exposing the electoral farce” internationally.

“The delay in the party’s analysis and debate over the electoral farce and the theft of the vote had one main reason – the wait for the publication of the OSCE/ODIHR final report,” he said, adding that “the opposition has presented every day facts and documents that, for Albanians and the international community, proved the May 11 vote was a farce.”

He said the party had submitted “hundreds of thousands of documents” to the relevant institutions to support its claims.

Berisha also referred to his participation in the general assembly of the Centrist Democrat International in São Paulo, Brazil, saying the organisation had condemned the Albanian elections. “The terror and political violence against pluralism received the punishment it deserved,” he added.

He said debate within the party’s local structures had already begun, with working groups created and guidelines drafted for internal consultations aimed at strengthening the PD for what he called a decisive fight against the “narco-regime.”

Berisha noted that the U.S. government had not congratulated the election process and, through a spokesperson, said the vote had not been free. “This had particular and important significance,” he said.

Berisha pledged to party members and supporters that the PD would embark on a strong renewal process ahead of its next political battles.
