Violence Against Women: Albania’s victim centre treated 41 cases this year

TIRANA, Nov 26 /ATA/ – Albania opened this year’s “16 Days of Activism” campaign against gender-based violence on Tuesday with nationwide awareness efforts until December 10 that marks the International Human Rights Day.

Juarba Guraj, head of the social sector at the National Centre for the Treatment of Domestic Violence Victims, told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Wednesday that the shelter is currently hosting four people – one woman and three unaccompanied minors.

The centre treated 41 residents between January and November, including 14 women and 26 children, eight of whom were unaccompanied minors, she said. None were foreign nationals.

From January 1 to November 3, the centre admitted 28 people – eight women and 20 children – and discharged 31, including 10 women and 21 children.

“Three of the minors who left were unaccompanied. No beneficiaries during the period came from the Roma community,” Guraj added.

She said the centre’s annual caseload has remained broadly stable, with most women and girls assisted having completed only basic education. Cases have historically been more common in northern Albania, especially in Kukës, while those from the south mainly came from Fier and Vlora. Awareness levels were higher in Tirana, Durrës and Korça.

The “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” is a global campaign led by UN Women under the UNiTE initiative.

This year’s edition focuses on digital violence – ranging from online harassment and stalking to disinformation, doctored images and the non-consensual sharing of intimate photos – forms of abuse that have grown rapidly with the expansion of online platforms.
