TIRANA, Nov 23 /ATA/ At the assembly of the world’s largest union of centre-right parties (CDI) in São Paulo, Brazil, the fifth resolution addressing Albania’s political situation was approved. Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha was also elected Vice President of the organisation.
The resolution raises the alarm over the deepening democratic backsliding in the country, the extreme concentration of power in the hands of the government, the merging of party and state, and the infiltration of organised crime into public institutions.
The document emphasises that, according to OSCE/ODIHR, the May 11 elections were marred by widespread misuse of public resources, vote-buying, intimidation, and selective justice, undermining a free and fair electoral process.
The CDI warns that state capture, control over judicial institutions, obstruction of parliamentary investigative committees, and the influence of organised crime on the economy and elections are pushing Albania toward a narco-authoritarian model, posing a serious threat to regional security and the EU enlargement process.
The resolution calls on the EU and the United States to condition Albania’s integration process on measurable progress in the rule of law, anti-corruption efforts, and electoral integrity. It also urges the implementation of targeted sanctions against individuals involved in organised crime and corruption, and supports the establishment of a caretaker government to ensure credible elections.
The CDI expresses its solidarity with the Albanian people and democratic forces working to restore pluralism, accountability, and European values.
