PRISHTINA, Nov 22 /ATA/ – Former member of Kosovo’s Special Police Unit, Arbnor Spahiu, was released from pre-trial detention in Serbia and returned home late Friday, his family’s lawyer Arianit Koci told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on Saturday.
Spahiu had been held in the northern Serbian city of Subotica since June 9, when a local court ordered his detention on suspicion of “aggravated murder” in the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo.
Koci said Serbian authorities freed Spahiu after failing to present any evidence to support the allegations.
Spahiu was arrested on June 7 at the Hungary-Serbia border while travelling by bus with his family from Austria to Kosovo.
Serbia accused him of involvement in the September 2023 attack in Banjska, where an armed Serb group ambushed Kosovo police, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku. Kosovo Police have confirmed that Spahiu was not an officer at the time of the attack.
Koci said Serbia never submitted any credible evidence that would have worsened his client’s legal position.
Kosovo has accused Serbia of orchestrating the Banjska assault, a claim Belgrade denies. Responsibility for the attack was taken by Milan Radoičić, former vice-chairman of the Serb List party in Kosovo, who is believed to be in Serbia.
