TIRANA, Nov 17 /ATA/ – Defence Minister Pirro Vengu convened Albania’s Civil Emergencies Committee on Monday evening after severe weather conditions hit the northern city of Shkodër.
Vengu said on social media that authorities had activated the Northern Infantry Regiment as a rapid-response unit to support all municipalities across the northern region.
“In Shkodër, after inspecting preventive infrastructure, we convened the Civil Emergencies Committee. Coordination is underway between municipalities, the State Police, regional directorates of critical infrastructure and the Armed Forces, now reinforced with the Northern Infantry Regiment, which serves as a rapid and dedicated intervention centre for any municipality in the region,” Vengu wrote.
Earlier today, heavy rain caused a landslide on the road to the tourist village of Theth, blocking five vehicles and leaving nine people stranded.
The National Civil Protection Agency said all those trapped in the Ndërlysaj area in Theth had been evacuated and were out of danger.
Shkodër municipality said crews were working to clear the roads, restore transport links and provide assistance to affected residents.
