TIRANA, Nov 14 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Friday that the government is finalising a major reform that will introduce national water and waste management operators, aiming to bring these sectors to a “completely new level”.
Speaking at a public meeting with residents of Tirana’s Administrative Unit No. 2, also attended by acting mayor Anuela Ristani, Economy and Innovation Minister Delina Ibrahimaj and Socialist Party MP Ogerta Manastirliu, PM Rama said the government is preparing to unveil a new water reform.
““We are preparing the final phase of a long and unavoidable reform to create the National Water Operator. Just as we have energy companies for generation and distribution – which are now successful – we will also have a National Water Operator that will allow us to raise management standards to a higher level,” he said.
Rama added that the government aims to secure strategic partnerships with major European companies with international experience in the sector.
The Premier said the same model will be applied to waste management.
“One of the direct consequences of Tirana’s growth is the increased volume of waste. This is felt across Albania wherever tourism has grown, but especially in Tirana, where not only tourism but also the number of residents and housing units has increased,” he said.
Rama explained that a national operator will handle waste treatment, while local collection will remain the responsibility of municipalities – with Tirana facing the biggest challenge due to its rapid expansion.
