PM Rama: EU membership a blessing; EU exit would be a nightmare

TIRANA, Oct 30 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Thursday that the European Union remains a “blessing” for Albania and the bloc is one of the most significant political achievements of modern times, arguing that any move to leave the bloc would be disastrous.

Speaking at the Paris Peace Forum, the government head dismissed suggestions that Albania needs to reconsider its strategic objective of EU membership.

“The European Union is one of the most extraordinary political projects humanity has ever benefited from,” he said. “For us, EU membership is a blessing. Leaving the EU would be like abandoning a marriage to experience  a nightmare.”

Rama noted that Albania’s path toward the EU should be seen in light of its past isolation.

“If the EU had not been there, after 50 years of dictatorship and poverty, Albania could have shared the fate of Afghanistan or Iraq,” he said.

The Premier also rejected claims that his views align with those of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

“I am not an ‘Orbanist’,” he said. “I have entirely different views when it comes to the European Union.”

He stressed that, despite internal tensions and criticism, the EU should be valued and protected.

The Paris Peace Forum, founded by French President Emmanuel Macron, brings together leaders and experts to discuss cooperation and global stability.
