TIRANA, October 30/ATA/ The Albanian Parliament turned down today the Democratic Party’s request for the dismissal of Speaker of the Assembly Niko Peleshi for violating the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure.
After presentation of two reports, the Parliament rejected with 79 votes against, 10 votes in favor and 0 abstentions the draft decision for the dismissal of Speaker of the Assembly.
The DP requested the dismissal of Peleshi claiming that the Speaker of the Assembly violated the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly during two plenary sessions, on September 16 and September 18.
According to the DP, Peleshi was not a, “guarantor of parliamentary equality, but an extension of the prime minister’s will”.
“Peleshi has legitimized a dangerous practice of excluding the opposition from the parliamentary debate”, the DP stressed.
On the other hand, the Socialist Party underlined that Peleshi has not committed any violation of the Constitution and that the DP report “does not prove any violation as alleged in the request”.
The SP emphasized that the Speaker of the Assembly has meticulously abided by all his constitutional and legal responsibilities while being in chair of the plenary session. /m.q/r.e/a.f/p.s./
