TIRANA, October 29 /ATA/ European Parliament’s Standing Rapporteur for Albania Andreas Schieder praised today Albania’s progress in the fight against corruption and in particular in addressing high-level corruption.
During the 20th meeting of the Albania-European Union Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee, Schieder noted that the depoliticisation of the judiciary expands the autonomy of the prosecution.
“The EC, in its 2025 rule of law report, talks about the depoliticisation of the judiciary and that this process ultimately expands the autonomy of the prosecution”, he said.
Referring to the EC report, Schieder said that it shows progress in the fight against corruption and in addressing high-level corruption.
“We think this is very important. Many officials have been investigated, prosecuted and convicted of corruption. But, still, corruption remains a problem”, he added.
In this regard, Schieder appreciated that in Albania it is Artificial Intelligence that can help in the fight against corruption.
According to him, corruption is a problem that is not only related to politics, but also to the economy and foreign companies that want to invest, so this is an important step.
“Albania has adopted the Anti-Corruption Strategy 2024-2030 and this is very important. SPAK is legally independent in its own way of functioning. We must accept that independent institutions make their own decisions and in the end it is not SPAK that puts people in prison, but there are the judges who decide on the cases”, he added.
Speaking about the recommendations of the OSCE-ODIHR report on the elections, Schieder stressed the need to regulate the issues related to electoral reform, such as the regulation on campaign financing and the introduction of restrictions in this regard. /r.e/a.f/p.s./
