Ordinary citizens rather than companies, most active in buying government securities

TIRANA, October 29 /ATA/ During the first nine months of the current year, most of the trading in government securities was made outside the Stock Exchange. Government securities are marketable debt instruments issued and guaranteed by the Government of the Republic of Albania. Government securities are issued in the form of Treasury bills and bonds, in both foreign and domestic currencies.

More than half of the trading was in bonds, which are long-term securities, while the rest was in treasury bills, which have shorter terms. Although bonds were worth more, the largest number of trades were in treasury bills because they are easier and faster to convert into cash.

Almost all trade was done by ordinary citizens, not companies or banks. They carried out over 98% of all transactions, which shows that people are choosing to invest their savings in government securities because they consider them safe.

On the other hand, the banks and companies that deal with trading these securities have made fewer transactions than last year. Their sales have fallen significantly, while purchases have only had a small increase. In some types of trades, there have been carried out no transactions. In total, if compared to last year, the value of trading in these securities has been about 5 billion lekë lower. /r.e/p.s./
