Albanian short film “Red Mud” to premiere at Germany’s Cottbus Film Festival

TIRANA, Oct 23 /ATA/ – Albanian director and screenwriter Evi Gjoni has scored another milestone in her artistic career, with her second short film “Red Mud” set for its world premiere at the Cottbus Film Festival in Germany.

The film features a 12-year-old Roma boy who works in a factory after school. One ordinary workday, when his employer treats him unfairly, becomes a turning point that shapes his dreams for the future. The film was co-financed by Albania’s National Center of Cinematography.

The Cottbus Film Festival is regarded as one of Central and Eastern Europe’s most prestigious cinema events, celebrating filmmakers who bring authentic, personal and aesthetically distinctive perspectives to storytelling.

Following the success of her debut short “Sheets”, Gjoni continues to explore themes of human connection, sensitivity and the unseen dimensions of everyday life. “Red Mud” marks a further step in her artistic maturity, offering a sharp and empathetic view of the world around her.

Gjoni previously took part in the international MIDPOINT Writers’ Room programme in Prague – a European initiative supporting emerging screenwriters. The experience allowed her to expand her craft in an international setting and refine her approach to character development and dramatic tension.
