Gonzato from Përmet: Albania must recycle up to 65% of waste by 2036

TIRANA, October 22/ATA/ EU Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato paid a visit to Përmet where he met Mayor Alma Hoxha about the Waste Recycling Center project.

Speaking to reporters, the ambassador said that the waste recycling center outside Përmet will reduce waste.

He emphasized that this center will also recycle plastic, paper, cardboard, aluminum and glass, and in this way the impact of waste on the environment will be reduced.

“The more tourism has increased, the greater the impact on environment”, he said.

Therefore, Gonzato praised the fact that the municipality itself has paid attention to the sustainable aspect of tourism and the environment. Gonzato said to the mayor that the municipality has not only invested in infrastructure, but also in the people themselves.

“We also saw the school nearby and everything related to environmental education is part of the school curriculum. There we met teachers and students who were enthusiastic about preserving the environment, about recycling, in other words, about environmental sustainability,” Gonzato said.

Gonzato said that these projects come within the framework of Albania’s negotiations with the EU and the environmental cluster, which is even more difficult.

“Albania has opened 5 out of 6 clusters that it needs to negotiate with the EU. And the last cluster that was opened includes everything related to climate change and the environment. This is a very complex cluster with some clear and ambitious objectives,” Gonzato said.

The ambassador emphasized that, by 2036, 65% of waste in Albania should be recycled and therefore, he added, the work should start now.

“In Albania, by 2036, 65% of waste will have to be recycled. Which means that the work must start now. We must start now and change the mindset of citizens,” he said.

Gonzato stressed that waste management projects will also be extended to Gjirokastra, Korça, but also to other areas. /gj.m/j.p/p.s./
