Albania’s power distribution losses fall to 16.24% in September

TIRANA, Oct 20 /ATA/ – Albania’s power distribution losses fell to 16.24% at the end of September 2025, down from 17.23% in the same period last year and a sharp improvement from 45% in 2013, the power distribution operator (OSSH) said on Monday.

According to OSSH, the cut in power grid losses is attributed to investments in infrastructure and technology, as well as improvements in management, structural reorganization, and ongoing field inspections aimed at formalizing the energy sector.

The government aims to reduce losses further to below 12% by 2029 through the rollout of smart meters that enable accurate measurements, real-time data transmission, and fair billing for consumers.

Losses in the network are divided into two categories: technical losses, caused by an outdated grid requiring modernization, and non-technical losses, including electricity theft, which will be subject to increased monitoring.

Thanks to recent investments, Albania’s electricity generation capacity has doubled from 1,768 MW in 2013 to 3,298 MW, while losses have fallen significantly, contributing to greater financial stability in the energy sector.
