TIRANA, Oct 19 /ATA/ Tirana welcomed over 5,000 runners from 50 different countries on Sunday.
The “Tirana Marathon” is a sporting event held for the ninth consecutive year, becoming an annual tradition that brings together thousands of Albanian and international runners to compete across 42 km, 21 km, and 10 km distances.
The marathon kicked off today at 08:00, meanwhile this year the event has taken on a special significance, as Tirana holds the title of “Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue.”
The Tirana Marathon includes four competition categories and will award 24 prizes overall, with the winner of the 42 km race receiving €5,000.
Taulant Stërmasi, former head of Albanian Athletics and one of the organizers of the Tirana Marathon, told a televised interview that the oldest participant this year is 84 years old, serving as an inspiration for all.
“Each year we grow bigger, attracting participants from around the world. The event is very well organized by the Tirana Municipality. There are 5,000 runners, and a few experienced health issues during the race. There are eight ambulances on standby. One athlete felt unwell at the finish line, received first aid, and is now doing well with his spouse. Even Ramush Haradinaj is participating, as this marathon unites everyone, regardless of politics or background,” Stërmasi said.
The marathon route passes through “Mother Teresa” Square, “Martyrs of the Nation” Boulevard, “Pope John Paul II” Square, the area near RTSH, the Elbasan Road Bridge, the Parliament building, “Skanderbeg” Square, “Zogu i Parë” and “Zogu i Ri” Boulevards, as well as Durrës, Kavaja, Myslym Shyri, “Joan of Arc” Boulevard, and Ibrahim Rugova and Lekë Dukagjini Streets.
The Tirana Marathon is not only a celebration of healthy living but also an opportunity to engage in sports.
