Protest in Tirana backs former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders on trial in The Hague

TIRANA, Oct 17 /ATA/ – Thousands of people are expected to gather on Friday in Tirana’s central Skanderbeg Square for a rally backing former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders on trial in The Hague for alleged war crimes.

Scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. local time, the protest will be held under the slogan “Freedom Has a Name” and is expected to draw participants from across Albanian-speaking regions, including Kosovo, Albania, and the diaspora.

The rally is organized by the KLA War Veterans’ Organization and supported by several former fighters’ associations and civil society groups. Organizers have called for a peaceful and dignified demonstration, framing it as a show of unity and a call for justice.

In a move to facilitate attendance, the Albanian government has suspended tolls on the Nation’s Highway for the day, allowing free travel for protesters heading to the capital. Meanwhile, the Municipality of Prishtina has arranged special transport for citizens traveling from Kosovo to Tirana.

The protest follows a series of similar events held recently in Kosovo and outside the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, where former President Hashim Thaçi, former parliamentary speaker Kadri Veseli, and former senior officials Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are facing war crimes charges.

A similar demonstration was held earlier in The Hague, and organizers have announced plans for a future protest in Skopje.
