Parliamentary majority rejects opposition motion on government programme

TIRANA, Oct 16 /ATA/ – Ruling Socialist Party (SP) on Thursday rejected an opposition motion to reopen a parliamentary debate on the government’s programme and newly formed cabinet, a session that originally took place on September 18.

The motion, filed by opposition lawmakers from the Democratic Party (DP), was voted down with 73 votes against.

Speaking in parliament, Taulant Balla, head of the Socialist parliamentary group, argued the request was procedurally invalid, as it sought to address multiple issues rather than a single specific topic as required under Article 98 of the parliamentary rules.

Balla stated that the opposition had missed the opportunity to debate during the original session and that the majority would not revisit it.

He emphasized that the SP remains open to motions and debates that are in line with the rules, particularly those related to EU accession and integration.

DP lawmaker Tomor Alizoti criticized the majority for denying debate on the government’s political programme, calling it “essential for democratic accountability.”

“Democracy thrives on debate,” Alizoti said. “We are close to the EU geographically, but still far from democratic practice.”
