TIRANA, Oct 14 /ATA/ – Kosovo claimed a historic 1–0 victory over Sweden on Monday night in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, with a massive red-and-black Albanian flag unfurled by fans ahead of kick-off at Sweden’s Nya Ullevi Stadium.
As is tradition in matches involving either Albania or Kosovo, the atmosphere in the stands was electric, driven by the passionate support of Albanian fans from across the Balkans and the diaspora.
Prime Minister Edi Rama took to the social media on Tuesday to share footage showing the moment the enormous national flag – symbolising unity and pride – was unfolded before the game, which he said “led the way” for Kosovo’s triumph.
The win lifts Kosovo to second place in Group B with 7 points after four matches, keeping their hopes alive for a first-ever World Cup qualification.
The result comes just days after Albania defeated Serbia in Leskovac, also as part of the 2026 qualifiers, in another landmark moment for Albanian football.
Kosovo’s next qualifying fixtures are scheduled for next month.
