World Bank: Albania a global example in using GovTech for environmental protection

TIRANA, Oct 9 /ATA/ – Albania has been recognized by the World Bank as one of three global examples showcasing how digital governance technologies (GovTech) can help protect the environment and address climate change.

Alongside Germany and Brazil, Albania is highlighted in the World Bank’s latest report for successfully aligning its digital and climate agendas. According to the report, these countries are designing digital solutions that aim to reduce carbon emissions, cut digital waste, and enhance the climate resilience of public services.

“Albania has invested heavily in digitalization, with the e-Albania portal offering more than 1,200 online services. With the momentum of its EU accession process, the government is expanding paperless procedures and redesigning services to respond to climate-related disasters. The next step is to strengthen monitoring and data collection to quantify environmental benefits,” the report states.

The World Bank assessment reflects Albania’s ongoing efforts to modernize public administration and build an efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly digital infrastructure.

The implementation of such approaches not only improves the quality of services for citizens but also reinforces Albania’s role in global efforts for a greener and more sustainable future.

The report also notes that information and communication technologies (ICT) account for about 2-4% of global greenhouse gas emissions – a figure expected to rise with the growing use of artificial intelligence and digital services – underscoring the need for environmentally conscious digital policies.
