New Viroi Bridge under construction, enhances access to Gjirokastër

TIRANA, Oct 6 /ATA/ Construction of the new Viroi Bridge continues apace in Gjirokastra. This project marks the first of 30 bridges planned for construction or rehabilitation throughout Albania, backed by the World Bank and financed by the Albanian government.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared photos from the construction site today, emphasizing that the bridge, built by ARA, will ensure uninterrupted and safe traffic flow throughout the year, improving access to and from the city of Gjirokastër.

Currently, the excavation and scarification processes have been completed throughout the entire project section, along with the concreting of the bridge abutments and piles, as well as the production and installation of the main beams on the bridge structure.

Prime Minister Rama stated that the Viroi Bridge will bring significant benefits, both for the movement of vehicles and for the development of the area.

The bridge, measuring 33 meters in length and 7 meters in width, will feature two lanes and sidewalks on both sides, contributing to climate-resilient transport infrastructure. Located on the SH4 route towards the Kakavija border crossing, the bridge is essential for regional connectivity.

The new bridge will shorten travel time, improve safety during floods, and connect communities in southern Albania, creating more opportunities for employment, education, healthcare, and market access.

Its construction ensures uninterrupted traffic flow throughout the year, benefiting over 200,000 vehicle drivers and 150,000 pedestrians. /j.p/sm/
