Opposition accuses government of blocking parliamentary debate on key issues

TIRANA, Sept 30 /ATA/ – The head of Democratic Party (DP) parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, on Tuesday accused the ruling Socialist majority of blocking parliamentary debate and avoiding accountability, after a request for a motion on the government’s declared priorities and the influence of organized crime was rejected.

Speaking to reporters, Bardhi said the opposition’s request for a debate motion was fully in line with parliamentary rules and focused on issues of national interest, including the government’s political programme and the integrity of cabinet members.

“The vote today revealed the truth – the majority does not want a parliamentary debate,” Bardhi said. “This disproves the narrative that the opposition is avoiding debate. Today’s decision showed clearly who is running away from parliamentary scrutiny and who wants a silent Parliament.”

Bardhi argued that the government is avoiding debate because it lacks clear priorities, a coherent programme, or achievements worth defending before the public.

The opposition lawmaker also accused the government of transforming Albania from a parliamentary republic into a “prime ministerial republic,” undermining institutional checks and balances.

Bardhi stated that the opposition would continue to use all parliamentary mechanisms to demand debate on the government’s priorities and ministerial appointments.

DP official also denounced the majority’s refusal to allow a debate and vote on a resolution recognizing the Serbian genocide in Kosovo, a motion the Democratic Party says it has submitted multiple times over the last four years.
