Albania among most advanced in region on public finance management – Finance Minister

TIRANA, Sept 18 /ATA/ – Finance Minister Petrit Malaj said on Thursday that Albania’s public administration ranks among the most advanced in the Western Balkans in managing public finances, according to international evaluations.

Malaj made the remarks during a meeting in Tirana with a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control, led by MEP Niclas Herbst.

The meeting focused on the implementation of the EU’s Reform and Growth Plan, a performance-based funding instrument aimed at accelerating reforms in candidate countries.

Malaj highlighted Albania’s stable economic growth, macroeconomic stability, and efforts to reduce public debt through structural reforms. He also emphasized the importance of transparency and integrity in the use of EU funds.

“We have strong mechanisms in place to prevent and address irregularities,” he said, citing favorable 2024 assessments from international bodies such as SIGMA and PEFA.

The discussions also addressed the EU’s Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and strategies to strengthen financial assistance for reforming countries.

Malaj reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to using public funds efficiently and in line with EU standards, as part of the country’s path toward EU membership.
