Berisha appears at anti-corruption prosecution structure, slams prosecutors over corruption probe

TIRANA, Sept 1 /ATA/ – Albania’s main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha appeared before the country’s Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) on Monday, as part of a court-ordered obligation to report regularly to authorities amid ongoing corruption charges.

Former Prime Minister Berisha arrived at the SPAK offices at around 10:00 a.m., in compliance with a “compulsory appearance” measure imposed by the Special Court of Appeals for Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO).

Speaking to media outside the building, Berisha strongly criticized SPAK chief prosecutor Altin Dumani, accusing him of “collaborating with criminal networks” and vowing that such cooperation would be “punished accordingly.”

He further claimed that “mafia-style elements linked to George Soros’s criminal organization” have infiltrated Albania’s judicial system.”

“Don’t forget that Altin Troplini (SPAK Chief Altin Dumani) was decorated after my arrest by Antony Blinken, a shameless man and member of Soros’s criminal organization, who today is not even allowed in federal offices in his own country,” Berisha claimed.

The opposition leader also stepped up attacks on judge Irena Gjoka, alleging she holds her position in “blatant violation of Albanian law,” and accused the High Judicial Council (KLGJ) of shielding her from accountability.

Ex-PM Berisha is under investigation for allegedly abusing his position during the privatization of a state-owned sports complex while in office. Prosecutors argue that Berisha used his influence to benefit his son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, in the sale of the former “Partizani” sports club property in central Tirana.

Berisha has denied the charges and described the investigation as politically motivated.
