Balluku: New projects for development of Albania’s railway sector

TIRANA, Aug 18 /ATA/ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, stated today that 2026 will mark a significant milestone for the development of Albania’s railway system, with several new projects to be financed by the Albanian Railway funds.

“Throughout 2026, we will be able to implement new projects that are not dependent on donor funding, as the Albanian Railway will assume a central role in their development,” Balluku remarked while inspecting the Tirana-Rinas-Durrës railway construction site, where station works along the line are currently in progress.

As part of these projects, Balluku highlighted the “Railway of the Nation,” which will connect Shkodër with Gjakova, forming part of a strategic Kosovo–Albania rail line.

The construction of the Vlorë–Vlorë International Airport railway line represents another significant investment aimed at facilitating transport to and from the new airport.

The revitalization of the Rrogozhinë–Fier–Vlorë railway line will be another project aimed at enhancing regional mobility and integrating with the new initiatives.

The Minister emphasized that these investments aim to modernize the railway infrastructure, facilitate passenger movement, and strengthen connections with neighboring countries, particularly Kosovo, noting that “the first milestone will be the Tirana-Rinas-Durrës railway.”

These projects are expected to make a significant contribution to the country’s economic development, tourism, and sustainable transportation.
