Albania still fighting 23 active wildfires

TIRANA, Aug 14 /ATA/ – Albanian authorities said Thursday that 23 wildfires remain active across the country, though the situation has stabilized in many previously affected areas.

Emergency services, including firefighters, civil protection units, local municipal staff, army personnel, and volunteers, continue working on the ground and from the air to contain the blazes.

In Delvinë, near Blue Eye National Park, more than 67 firefighters, 80 army personnel, 30 municipal staff, 11 firefighting vehicles, and 10 army transport vehicles are engaged, supported by an Italian Canadair water-bombing plane and six ambulances.

Fires also remain active in the southern Albania municipalities of Finiq, Himarë, and Selenicë, while in the north, wildfires persist in the protected Mali me Gropa-Val area of Bulqizë.

Evacuations were carried out in parts of Poliçan due to fast-spreading fires, with three helicopters – two from the United Arab Emirates and one from the Czech Republic – assisting ground forces.

Other hotspots under monitoring include Berat, Skrapar, Tiranë, Rrogozhinë, Dropull, Tepelenë, Gramsh, Kolonjë, and Mirditë.

Authorities say over 150 personnel are engaged in difficult mountainous terrain to contain flames and prevent risks to lives and property, while all remaining fire sites are under continuous supervision.
