Kumbaro: Requalification of Bënja thermal waters while observing rules of a protected area

TIRANA, August 6 /ATA/ At the Bënja thermal waters construction site in Përmet, there is work underway to improve services, the tourist landscape and requalification interventions so that to create a sustainable development attraction.

Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro closely inspected the works accompanied by representatives of the Albanian Development Fund, the mayors of the municipalities of Përmet and Këlcyra, Head of the National Agency for Protected Areas Daniel Pirushi and Head of the Vjosa River National Park Administration Office.

“With the Albanian Development Fund, we have started investing in a redevelopment site for the entire area as a need to intervene first and foremost to orient the flows, both of the cars that gather at the entrance to this natural and tourist area and to organize the entire space, offering services. Here there is a total lack of water and electricity. With this investment by the Albanian government, we will turn it into an attraction of sustainable development because we are in a protected area and we must be very careful not to have serious interventions,” said Kumbaro.

This project is divided into several areas which include the parking area, the camper van area, picnic areas, an area dedicated to the sale of local products and crafts, the bathtub area, an amphitheater designed for activities, as well as an area for services where there will also be showers and changing rooms.

Kumbaro called for close cooperation between Përmet municipality and the National Agency for Protected Areas for the successful management of this attraction.

“We need cooperation with the municipality to find a good management model, in order to maintain the standard, cleanliness and prevent this entire investment from degenerating. This is why we are all here today, together with the Vjosa National Park Administration Office, the National Agency for Protected Areas and the Këlcyra and Përmet municipalities, which have this area as one of their favorite tourist destinations on their tourist map,” said Kumbaro.

This investment is expected to be completed in March 2026.

Bënja thermal springs in Përmet are considered the best in Europe. The thermal springs of Bënja, or as they are also called, Bënja baths, are located 14 kilometers from the southern city of Përmet in the Petran municipality, only 3 kilometers from the place where the Vjosa River joins the Lëngarica stream. Their special feature is that these are open sources in nature. The temperature of these waters is 26-32°C.

This place, surrounded by wild nature, represents a unique combination between adventure history and nature.
