TIRANA, July 30 /ATA/ – In Lezhë Municipality, two educational institutions damaged by the November 26, 2019 earthquake have been fully reconstructed or rehabilitated under the EU-funded “EU4Schools” programme.
According to a social media update by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Albania, the newly completed facilities include the 9-year “Gjergj Kastrioti” school and the combined 9-year school and kindergarten “Fran Ivanaj” in Ishull-Shëngjin.
Following the 2019 earthquake, the EU4Schools programme, launched by the European Union and implemented by UNDP in cooperation with the Albanian government, has provided modern and safe learning environments for approximately 1,000 students, children, and teachers at the two institutions. The improvements have also benefitted an estimated 68,000 residents in the surrounding communities.
With a 75 million euros grant from the European Union, the EU4Schools initiative has so far completed 61 out of 63 planned school buildings in 11 municipalities affected by the earthquake, positively impacting the lives of more than 25,000 students, children, and teachers.
