TIRANA, July 21 /ATA/ – Sali Berisha, leader of Albania’s Democratic Party, accused the country’s new justice system of political bias and abuse after appearing before the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office (SPAK) on Monday.
Berisha alleged SPAK chief Altin Dumani opened criminal cases “without naming suspects,” and launched a harsh attack on Judge Irena Gjoka, claiming she had concealed a past prison sentence in the neighboring Greece.
He claimed new justice system officials lack legal morality and apply no clear standards, accusing Gjoka of hiding a prior prison sentence.
He alleged that Judge Gjoka was sentenced to three months in prison by a court in Ioannina, Greece, and failed to declare this during her vetting and asset declarations.
The statement came shortly after Berisha appeared before prosecutors, as required by a court decision ordering him to report regularly during his ongoing corruption probe into alleged irregularities in the privatization of the former “Partizani” sports complex, involving his son-in-law.
SPAK says the former Prime Minister Berisha has improperly influenced the deal, causing state losses. Berisha denies the accusations, calling them politically motivated.
