TIRANA, July 16 /ATA/ In Gjirokastra, there is work underway on construction of the new Viroi bridge, the first of 30 bridges to be built or improved throughout Albania, thanks to government investment with the support of the World Bank.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro shared photos today from the construction site of the new Viroi bridge, which is being implemented by the Albanian Road Authority, an investment with the support of the World Bank that will ensure uninterrupted and safe traffic throughout the year.
Kumbaro wrote in the social media that the bridge will have 2 lanes and sidewalks for pedestrians on both sides, as part of the effort for a climate-sustainable transport infrastructure.
The bridge is located on the road towards the Kakavija border crossing with Greece and is essential for regional connectivity.
The bridge will be 33 meters long and 7 meters wide, with 2 lanes and sidewalks for pedestrians on both sides. The new bridge will reduce the travel times, improve safety during floods and connect communities in southern Albania by creating more employment, education, healthcare and access to markets.
According to the World Bank, in the absence of alternative routes when the bridge floods, the construction of the new bridge will ensure uninterrupted traffic throughout the year.
Over 200,000 drivers and 150,000 pedestrians will benefit as part of the effort for a climate-resilient transport infrastructure. /m.m/j.p/p.s./
