PM Rama: Tirana–Durrës highway expansion nears completion

TIRANA, July 8 /ATA/ – Construction work on the expansion of the Tirana–Durrës highway, one of Albania’s busiest transport corridors, is nearing completion, Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Tuesday.

The project, which will upgrade the road to a Category A motorway, includes the addition of new lanes to ease congestion between the capital and the country’s main port city.

The government head shared footage from the construction site, noting that construction of new lanes is almost complete, while reconstruction of the existing ones is also underway.

Traffic has been temporarily diverted near the Kashar overpass- towards Mother Teresa International Airport – via a newly widened section equipped with temporary signage meeting road safety standards.

The upgraded route will feature four lanes in each direction, including an emergency lane, significantly increasing capacity. Once completed, the speed limit will be raised to 130 km/h.

Work began last year on expanding the highway, which stretches from Kamza overpass in Tirana to Dajlani Bridge in Durrës. Often referred to locally as “Autostrada” since the 1990s, the road is a key artery connecting Albania’s largest administrative, industrial, and tourism centers, as well as key north-south and east-west corridors.

During the peak summer months, daily traffic volumes on the route range between 90,000 and 120,000 vehicles.
