Berisha calls on democrats and citizens to join student protest

TIRANA, Oct 14 /ATA/

Democratic Party chairman Sali Berisha has called on party supporters and citizens to join the students’ protest, describing the moment as ground-breaking.

In a statement to the media, Berisha said that students at the University of Tirana had responded to the government’s “barbaric violence” with a “general strike.”

According to Berisha, other universities across the country have joined the movement, including those in Elbasan, Vlora, Shkodra, Durrës, and Korça.

He also highlighted the response of students from “Partizani” High School and other pupils who have walked out of classes to join the protest.

The Democratic Party leader said that several demonstrators are hospitalized and need surgical intervention.

“Today, tens of thousands of students and their supporters ground the protest forward from 2 p.m. to 10 a.m., taking to the Durrës Street and demonstrating what he described as ‘epic determination.’ Several protesters are hospitalized and need surgery,” Berisha said.

He emphasized that the Democratic Party would continue to support the student protest, mobilizing all its available resources.

Berisha called on Democrats and citizens to join the student protest, describing it as a ground-breaking moment, and warned of firm stand against those attempting to intimidate students on behalf of the government.

At the end of his statement, Berisha called for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation, describing it as “the only way to achieve the quickest and least painful resolution to the deep crisis into which he has plunged the country.”

“His immediate departure and the formation of a government that will lead the country toward free elections are the prerequisites for the country to emerge from the crisis,” Berisha said.
