TIRANA, July 2 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama has called for a fundamental shift in Albania’s agricultural sector, urging a move away from subsidy-dependent practices toward a more entrepreneurial and sustainable model.
In remarks at a meeting with farmers and agribusinesses on Wednesday, the government head emphasized the need to better utilize financial tools such as the new rural credit line and the “Mountain Package,” warning that without proper mechanisms, these resources risk remaining underused.
Rama acknowledged weaknesses in institutions meant to support rural development and called for stronger cooperation at local and regional levels to align efforts with Albania’s EU accession goals.
“Agriculture must be about building viable rural enterprises – not merely surviving on subsidies,” Rama said. “This requires active support from local government and a shared structure for success, not reliance on individual ambition alone.”
The Premier also highlighted the need to prioritize agro-processing and increase exports of value-added products, positioning agriculture as a central pillar of the country’s economic future.
