Albania reports five livestock plague outbreaks, culling underway according to rules to contain spread

TIRANA, June 13 /ATA/ – Albania’s National Agency for Veterinary and Plant Protection (AKVMB) has confirmed an expansion of the affected zones following outbreaks of peste des petits ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats across the country.

In a press statement on Friday, the Agency said seven farms have officially tested positive for the disease across five outbreaks. Infected animals are being culled in accordance with strict veterinary protocols to prevent further spread.

Authorities have imposed bans on the trade and movement of live animals in the affected areas. The National Agency for Veterinary and Plant Protection urged farmers to immediately report any signs of illness among their livestock to local veterinarians.

“This is a critical step to protect herds and stop the further spread of a highly contagious and devastating disease for the livestock sector,” the Agency said.

Veterinary teams have been deployed on the ground and remain on high alert. They are working closely with farmers to collect samples for testing and to carry out ongoing monitoring of animal health in the impacted zones.
