TIRANA, May 29 /ATA/ – Work is full steam ahead to upgrade and expand the 33-km motorway linking Albania’s two largest cities, Tirana and Durrës.
The Project Management Sector Engineer at the Albanian Road Authority, Adja Sefa, said in a televised interview on Thursday that expansion project had advanced with around 50% of the work volume already complete.
“The project includes construction of two additional lanes on each side, namely on the left side in Tirana-Durres direction, where work has been focusing on construction of asphaltic layers. To this end, traffic has been diverted to two new lanes built to allow for continued work on the existing lanes,” Sefa said.
According to her, the construction of the first 6 kilometer road section that connects the Tirana-Durres highway via the Qafë Kashar overpass with the Eagle square and airport is scheduled to complete this year.
The Tirana-Durrës axis is not only the busiest in Albania but also a vital economic corridor, hosting over half of the country’s population and its economic activities. The expansion of this highway is pivotal as it directly supports the economic heart of Albania, facilitating smoother and potentially more efficient transportation of goods and people.
Currently, the permitted speed limit in this segment is up to 90 kilometers per hour, which is planned to increase to 130 kilometers per hour after the expansion is completed and the road is transformed into category A highway.
