TIRANA, May 19 /ATA/ – The opening ceremony of Europe Week and the high-level discussion “What makes us European kicked off at the House of Europe in Tirana on Monday, with participants engaging in a discussion on the European identity.
Federica Mogherini, Rector of the College of Europe, said in her remarks that the European Union is a firm and solid space with credible institutions.
“Defining what it means to be European is something that is not easy to answer. Our reflection has to do with identity, with our policies or values. As Europeans, we have a more developed approach than others, because our history of thousands of years is such, which has put us in different contexts. We are not only dealing with our geographical roots, but also with historical ones. What makes us feel European is the relationship we have with the past, very unique compared to others in the world,” Mogherini said.
The former European Union’s foreign policy chief noted that lessons must be learned from the past, and be then translated into norms, values, rules and institutional rule of law systems.
According to her, individual freedom coexists with the rights of others and this combination is a typical example of European identity.
Frederica Mogherini stated that the EU translates into a solid, reliable, strong space, with reliable institutions, and this, according to her, is important in the world we live in.
