Kosovo Assembly fails again to elect new Speaker

PRISHTINA, May 19 /ATA/ – Kosovo’s parliament failed for the 18th time on Monday to elect a new speaker, further deepening the political stalemate since February’s general elections.

The session chair Avni Dehari renewed his appeal to the political parties to engage in consultations, but failing to reach a breakthrough.

The latest attempt to form a commission to oversee the secret vote for election of the new Speaker failed again to gain support from lawmakers of other political parties, after 52 lawmakers voted pro, down from a required majority of 61 votes.

Last weekend, Dehari proposed that the next sessions to elect new Speaker take place once a week, but the proposal was turned down by other parliamentary parties.

A new session is scheduled to take place on May 21.

Vetëvendosje’s nominee, Albulena Haxhiu, has repeatedly fallen short of the 61 votes required.

Parties including PDK, LDK, AAK, and Lista Serbe declined to nominate a member to oversee the vote during Monday’s continuation of the inaugural session.

Kosovo’s Assembly remains stalled at the crucial step of electing the Speaker, a prerequisite for forming the new cabinet.
