TIRANA, May 1 /ATA/ The Democratic Party chairman Sali Berisha announced on Thursday that the EPP Congress has adopted a resolution focused on safeguarding the integrity of Albania’s electoral process.
At a press conference regarding the European People’s Party Congress in Valencia, Berisha said that “the EPP Congress, which unites 82 center-right parties from across Europe—parties that lead the European Commission and Parliament, govern countries like Germany and Austria, and hold the prime minister’s position in 12 other nations while participating in several other governments—passed Emergency Resolution No. 4, just a week ahead of Albania’s elections, focused on safeguarding the integrity of the country’s electoral process.”
He emphasized that the resolution accuses Edi Rama’s regime of election manipulation, abuse of power, and undermining the rule of law, leading to lack of accountability.
Berisha further stated that “in its Emergency Resolution No. 4, adopted yesterday, the EPP calls on the EU, OSCE, Council of Europe, and other international democratic institutions to take action to stop all forms of abuse of state power, vote buying, voter intimidation, and electoral manipulation.”
The chairman of the Democratic Party said that “the resolution urges the prosecutor’s office to conduct a thorough and timely investigation into all allegations of electoral crimes before the elections and ensure that those responsible are held to account.”
Berisha highlighted that the resolution demands equal media access for all political actors, independent electoral monitoring, and the deployment of additional long-term observers by European institutions to high-risk municipalities. It also calls for documenting and publicly denouncing electoral abuses, while urging the application of EU accession conditionality mechanisms, which could result in Edi Rama’s legitimacy being revoked if violations persist.
