Berisha pledges fivefold increase in farm subsidies within a year if elected

TIRANA, April 16 /ATA/ – Democratic Party (DP) leader Sali Berisha has unveiled a series of policy proposals for Albania’s agriculture and rural development, pledging fivefold increase in government subsidies for farmers if his main opposition party wins next month’s parliamentary elections in the country.

Presenting opposition candidates at a meeting with local residents in the administrative municipal unit No. 15 in Tirana on Wednesday, Berisha promised significant subsidies and direct monetary payments to farmers across the country.

“Every state provides subsidies to farmers, providing cash to all of those who cultivate, harvest, grow animals and plant seedlings,” he said.

The opposition leader claimed that the Socialist government had opened borders to Serbia through the Open Balkan initiative, saying that “no Albanian farmer can compete against farmers who receive subsidies eight times higher.”

Speaking about his party program, Berisha vowed to raise agriculture subsidies to the level of North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

The opposition leader also pledged to set a living minimum of 200 euros for every Albanian citizen in the first three months of a DP-led government.

“We will also introduce the consumer card, which will allow everyone to receive reimbursement for the 20% value added tax for every basic food product they purchase,” he said.
