Kosovo’s CEC certifies Feb 9 election results, clearing path to formation of new institutions

PRISHTINA, March 27 /ATA/ – Kosovo’s Central Election Commission has officially certified the February 9 parliamentary election results on Thursday, clearing the path to formation of a new post-election government in the country.

The central election body approved certification of the February 9 election results with nine votes in favor and two against.

Two representatives of Vetëvendosje in CEC rejected certification of the election results now, arguing that their party has demanded cancellation of the postal votes, claiming the votes were manipulated and demanding a re-vote by mail. However, the country’s Supreme Court has rejected the complaint.

The vote confirmed victory for the ruling party, Vetëvendosje (LVV), led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, which secured 42.3% of ballots cast. However, with 48 of 120 seats in parliament, the party will need coalition partners to form a new government.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) followed with 20.95%, and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) secured 18.27%. The AAK-Nisma coalition secured 7.06 percent.

The Serb List – the biggest party of Kosovo Serbs – has secured 4.26% of the votes.

Once the new parliament is seated, President Osmani is expected to formally nominate a prime minister from LVV, who must secure a majority of at least 61 votes to form a government.
