Memorandum of Understanding on establishment of Multifunctional Center at Bylis Archaeological Park

TIRANA, March 12 /ATA/ The Institute of Archaeology (IA), part of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) signed a memorandum of understanding for the conservation plan of the discovered artifacts and the project for the establishment of a Multifunctional Center in the Bylis Archaeological Park, which includes the ancient cities of Bylis and Klos.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Stefania Vizzaccaro, Director of the AICS Regional Office, and Adem Bunguri, Director of the Institute of Archaeology, part of the Academy of Sciences of Albania.

This memorandum aims to establish technical and scientific cooperation between the parties, within the framework of the EU project for the Bylis and Klos Archaeological Park, focused on tourism with an emphasis on cultural heritage.

The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation will work and coordinate information, archives, and technical assistance for field activities, providing support to AICS and its subcontractors or partners in project development, while upholding the rights of those who conducted archaeological work in Bylis.

In the ceremony held at the Institute of Archaeology, the President of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, Acad. Skënder Gjinushi, thanked the European Union for its support and investments in the development of scientific research in Albania, particularly for the investments aimed at showcasing the cultural heritage of our country.

“This agreement serves as a model, one that the Institute of Archaeology and its staff are highly invested in, as it is expected that their extensive work will be made more accessible and visible to the general public. Consequently, the implementation of this project, in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology for its scientific aspects, is the most effective way to reassess and widely showcase our cultural heritage. The archaeological site of Bylis is one of the most significant sites, alongside other well-known ones like Butrint and Apollonia. Thus, with the implementation of this agreement, Bylis will take its rightful place, becoming a key reference point for studies, research, and the promotion of our archaeological legacy,” stated Gjinushi.

Gjinushi also mentioned that after the central museum project in Bylis is completed, the Academy of Sciences of Albania is eager to pursue future collaborations, with the goal of expanding and improving the Archaeological Museum at the Institute of Archaeology, a part of ASHSH, in Tirana.
