Law Commission approves amendments to Electoral Code on diaspora vote, rejects DP request

TIRANA, Feb 11 /ATA/ – Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs adopted Tuesday a series of changes to Albania’s electoral law regarding the vote of the Albanian citizens living abroad.

Lawmakers approved the proposal to cover postal costs for emigrants. Parliamentary majority and opposition MPs also agreed that counting of votes from the Albanian expats be carried out by political commissioners and a technical representative from the Central Election Commission.

They backed the amendment to extend the deadline for registration of the political parties in the elections, and approved the complain procedures against CEC decisions and registration of expatriates to vote in May 11 elections.

The Committee rejected a proposal forwarded by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), demanding that Albanian expats vote with biometric documents of their host countries.

The amendments to the Electoral Code are expected to be approved by lawmakers at a regular plenary session on Thursday.
