Health Minister: Cochlear implant program has changed lives of dozens of kids with hearing impairment

TIRANA, Feb 10 /ATA/ – The cochlear implant program at the Otorhinolaryngology  service at the “Mother Teresa” University Hospital Center continues to successfully restore hearing and improve lives of dozens of children with hearing impairment in the last four years, the Minister of Health and Social Protection Albana Koçiu said on Monday.

“Fitting cochlear implants takes place together with the programming of the device, which, together with speech therapy, helps children not only hear, but also learn to speak,” Koçiu said.

Health Minister underlined that placing the implant is the hope for children with hearing loss who ho do not benefit conventional hearing aids

“A cochlear implant is a device that is surgically placed to enable people with hearing loss to hear again. The ENT service has been performing this type of surgery for children with severe hearing impairment for several years, enabling them not only to hear, but also to develop speaking. This procedure, which was not previously performed in Albania, is now possible for Albanian children,” Birkena Qirjazi, head of the ENT department at the University Hospital Centre said.
